Obituary

Alice J. States, 97, of Montour Falls, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility. She was born in Elmira on January 20, 1920, the daughter of the late Otto and Ruth Hynes. She was a member of the Schuyler County Senior Citizens Club, RSVP, and the Red Hat Society. Alice loved to volunteer. She worked several years at "Kraft Corner" Senior Citizens store, and was a receptionist at Schuyler Hospital. She did newsletters for Cornell Cooperative Extension in Schuyler County, and sold raffle tickets and t-shirts for the races. She sold daffodils for the American Cancer Society, and carnations for the American Heart Association. She also helped in fundraising for the Schuyler County Humane Society, rang the bell for the Salvation Army, and volunteered with the American Red Cross blood bank canteen. She was in fundraising for both the Senior Citizen Club and RSVP, and also served as registrar and correspondence secretary for both. Alice received the Schuyler County Senior Citizen of the award in 1981 for the Senior Citizen Club, Schuyler County Senior Citizen award in 1991 for the Office of the Aging, and Schuyler County Senior Citizen of the Year Award in 1992 for Cornell Cooperative Extension. Alice went on several bus trips over the years, and enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles. Her favorite quote was, "I'm living for my family". Alice is survived by her sister, Mary Richer; son, Kenneth (Judy) States; daughter, Alice (Vern) Potter; daughters-in-law, Annette and Carlene States; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Lloyd A. States, daughter, Martha Dobell, sons, Lloyd E. States, and James States, and brother, Edward Hynes. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 from 1-4 pm at Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls. Memorial services will follow at 4:00 pm. A celebration of her life will continue immediately after services at the Montour Moose Club. Private burial will be held by the family at Laurel Hill Cemetery. The family will provide the flowers. Memorials may be made in Alice's memory to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or "home delivered meals".
