Clayton Henry Sauberan, III, age 86, of Horseheads, NY, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2026, in the comfort of his home. Clayton was born on May 9, 1939 in Long Island City, NY to the late Clayton H. and Sophie (Heller) Sauberan, Jr.
Clayton attended Bayside High School, graduating with the Class of 1957. He went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from SUNY Oswego in 1962, and later received his Master’s in Education from Elmira College. He married the love of his life, Nancy E. (Tuma) Sauberan on July 7, 1962 at the Catharine United Methodist Church, and they shared 63 wonderful years together. He had a long career in the Elmira City School District, as an Industrial Arts teacher at Southside High School and also as a Technology teacher at Broadway Junior High.
Clayton was a very active member of his community, belonging to the Kiwanis Club, acting as Assessor for the Town of Veteran for many years, and holding the position of Treasurer for the Odessa-Catharine United Methodist Church, where he was a faithful congregant. He was passionate about flying, being a private pilot for many years, and exploring all 7 continents of the world on his many adventures with Nancy. Boating and boat building were also beloved pastimes, and he was very proud that “all 5 of the Claytons” in the family built a boat together. Clayton’s greatest achievement was his family, and he was always very proud of both his children and grandchildren, and the people that they have become.
He is survived by his children, Jennifer Sauberan and Clayton H. (Pam) Sauberan, IV; sister, Diana (Roger) Sauberan Wolf; and grandchildren, Hanna Sauberan and Clayton Sauberan, V. He was predeceased by his parents; and his loving wife, Nancy (November 10, 2025).
The family would like to thank Clayton’s caregivers, who allowed him to stay at home the last 4 years, and the special friends and family who visited and checked in on him, especially after Nancy passed away.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday, February 16, 2026 from 10:30am-12:00pm at the Odessa-Catharine United Methodist Church, 305 Church St., Odessa, NY. A Memorial Service will follow at 12:00 pm. He will be laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Odessa-Catharine United Methodist Church.
