Elaine M. Strait, 76, of Watkins Glen, passed away on December 19, 2014 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. She was a long term cancer survivor and passed from health related complications. She was born in Ithaca on January 20, 1938, the daughter of the late William and Ellen (Nurmi) Lummuka. She graduated from Horseheads High School where she was the piano accompanist for the Chamber Singers. Elaine retired from Westinghouse after many years of service and previously worked at Bell Phone Company in Elmira. She enjoyed camping, music, doing crossword puzzles, spending time with her family and was a big support for her grandson Joseph, III. Elaine was the epitome of Finnish "Sisu" and had great courage, determination and perseverance. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Strait, Sr., and by her daughter-in-law, Marilyn (Jerzak) Strait. She is survived by her children, Joseph Strait, Jr. of Watkins Glen, James (Denise) Strait of Horseheads, and Julie Strait (Joseph Clugstone) of Watkins Glen; sister, Sharon (Donald) Dilworth of Clayton, NY; seven grandchildren, Joseph Strait, III, Robert Bond, Nicole Gleckner, Kristin Strait, Kaarina Strait, Thomas Cook and David Strait; five great grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Saturday, December 27, 2014 from 1-3 pm at Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls. A funeral service will follow at 3 pm with burial in Millport Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rochester Ronald McDonald House or the American Cancer Society.
