George J. Pyhtila

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of George “Georgie” J. Pyhtila age 30, on March 4, 2026. He was a beloved son, brother, family member, and friend, whose presence brought warmth, joy, and love to all who knew him.

Born on February 21, 1996 in Montour Falls, NY. Georgie grew up surrounded by family who cherished him. From an early age, he spent countless hours playing with his siblings, nieces, and nephew, enjoying the simple joys of childhood. He loved sports, fishing with his dad and approached life with a natural energy and curiosity.

As a student Georgie attended Odessa-Montour School District, where he was remembered for his genuine warmth and welcoming spirit. He formed friendships easily, connecting with students from many backgrounds and interests. His ability to make others feel included and valued was one of the qualities that made him so special. As a standout multi-sport athlete, he brought energy, determination, and enthusiasm to every game, excelling particularly on the basketball court. He also had a strong curiosity for hands-on activities and history, enjoying classes like Technology and exploring the stories that shaped the world around him.

Like many, Georgie faced the challenges of addiction. He struggled bravely, sometimes quietly and sometimes openly. Addiction is a tragic disease, but it does not define his character, the love he carried, or the impact he had on others. While this illness was a part of his life, it does not overshadow his generosity, compassion, and the light he shared with those around him.

Georgie is survived by his parents, George and Jane Pyhtila; his siblings, Sarah (Pyhtila) Yonts, Matt Pyhtila, Matt Redmond, and Rachel Pyhtila; and multiple nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Wrenleigh Pyhtila.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Georgie’s life on Saturday, March 14, 2026 from 1-3 pm at Vedder-Scott & Zinger Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, NY. In honor of his memory, the family encourages acts of compassion toward those struggling with addiction. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Finger Lakes Addiction Counseling and Recovery Agency (FLACRA).
