James Frederick Holton, age 88, of Millport, NY, passed away peacefully at Arnot Ogden Hospital in Elmira, NY on Saturday, June 13, 2026 after battling cancer for an extended time. He was born on August 20, 1937 to Earl and Grace (Tanner) Holton in Millport, NY.
James is survived by his children, Lori Holton of Millport NY, Andrew (Faith) Holton of Tyrone, PA, and daughter in law Valerie Holton of Elmira, NY; grandchildren, Hannah (Jonathan) Chick, Levi (Chelsea) Holton, Leah (Tyler) Smith and Caleb (Karissa) Holton; great grandchildren, Oliver and Lucy Holton; Peter and Gwendolyne Chick; Magnolia, Elsie, Lorel and Palmer Smith; and Matthias and Edmond Holton; and sibling, Carolyn (Morris) Fedele.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Rebecca; his son David Holton; his siblings Betty Fisk, Walter Holton, Lois Daly, George Holton, Lena Morris, and Judy Holton; and his great granddaughter, Aurora Holton.
James graduated high school from Odessa-Montour in 1957. He then served our country by enlisting in the United States Navy where he served for four years (both active and reserves.) He married his sweetheart Rebecca Campbell (daughter of Leon and Helen Campbell) on February 20, 1960. They met as teenagers at church youth group at church in Millport, NY. They were married for 59 years until her death in 2019.
He enjoyed being a husband and being Dad to his three children. He was always there for his family to make sure they were loved and provided for. He worked tirelessly at his home and his employment, first Moore Business forms in Elmira and then a long term career at International Salt Company in Watkins Glen NY filling many positions, the last being meter mechanic which he loved. He worked there until his retirement.
He was very active in the churches he attended thru the years serving in any capacity he was needed such as Sunday School teacher, Youth Leader, Trustee, Deacon, Missions and other committees, always a helping hand at all the work bees and more. He was always there when the doors were open. He loved the Lord and led his life serving Him faithfully. His greatest wish would be all those he knew would love and honor God with their lives.
He retired a few years early to care for his wife Rebecca who was facing many health difficulties. He cared for her with love and compassion and never wavered. He always showed love for her and his children.
James was a friendly, God honoring man, who would help anyone in need. He loved people and he loved his life. If you knew him you would hear how he wanted to live to age 100 years. He didn’t make it down here on earth, but I’m sure after one step on the shores of Heaven, that wish was long gone in his memory.
