John S. Mathews, Jr., 81, of Alpine, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. He was born in the Town of Catharine on September 26, 1940 the son of the late John S. Mathews and Margaret P. Swartwood. John served with the US Army from 1960-1963. He retired from the Ithaca City School District. John is survived by his wife, Anna Mathews; children, Gerlinde Mathews, John Samuel Mathews, IV, Dan and Tammy (Packer) Mathews and Raymond and Casey (Fitzgerald) Mathews; sister, Louella Miller; and his grandchildren, Darrick Mathews, Jacob Mathews, Danny Myers, Anneliese Myers, Ellie Mathews and Hannah Mathews. Services were held privately by his family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Vedder-Scott & Zinger Funeral Home, Montour Falls.
