Obituary

Joseph T. Gulyas, 85, passed away on October 25, 2012, at the Beechtree Care Center of Ithaca, NY after an extended illness. Born in Ithaca, on May 28, 1927, he was the son of Stephen and Mary Tobias and later adopted by Louis and Mary Gulyas. He was a graduate of the Trumansburg Central High School in 1944. Mr. Gulyas served in the United States Army, was a veteran of World War II, and a member of the American Legion in Trumansburg. He was a member of the Mecklenburg Methodist Church, and was a charter member of the Mecklenburg Volunteer Fire Department. He loved to sing and was proud to have sung at several churches and numerous settings. He was a former member of the Elmira Chapter Mark Twain Barbershop Chorus. Joe worked in the automotive business his entire life. He worked for Goodrich, Goodyear, owned and operated Joe's Atlantic, and retired from the Ithaca Tire Co. Joe was predeceased by his wife Virginia, his son Tenor, brothers Stephen Tobias, and sisters Rose Tobias Arthur and Rosa Himmelsbacher. He is survived by daughters Linda (Mark) McFall of Oswego, Nancy (Gary) Hoffman of Ithaca, Joy Jones of Newfield, and son Steven (Gayle) Gulyas of Ithaca; six grandchildren; two great grandsons, and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on October 30th from Noon to 2:00 PM followed by a Memorial Service at the Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 North Genesee St., Montour Falls, NY. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Odessa. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Mecklenburg Volunteer Fire Department.
