Vedder-Scott & Zinger History

We stand behind our long-standing reputation and remain committed to serving our community with the same values passed down through generations of funeral directors.

Vedder and Scott, Inc. Funeral Home was established in 1949 by Earl Vedder and Wendall Scott at 122 North Genesee Street, located in an 1844 building that is part of the historic “Glorious T” in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region. In 1972, Wendall Scott’s son, Fred, joined the funeral home, continuing the family’s tradition of service.

In 1981, the Heal Funeral Home on Church Street in Odessa was acquired, providing a second location to serve the surrounding communities until its closing in 2010. Fred Scott faithfully served the Montour Falls, Odessa, and neighboring areas for more than forty years before transferring ownership to David Zinger, a licensed funeral director with over 25 years of experience, at the end of 2013. Fred Scott passed away on April 21, 2022.

Haughey-Wood & Zinger History

In 1935, Albert “Dutch” Haughey founded Haughey Funeral Home in Watkins Glen, New York, beginning in a downtown storefront location. During those early years, all services were held in the private homes of the families he served, a reflection of the personal care he provided, as recalled by his daughter, Judy.

After marrying his wife, Tillie, in 1937 and welcoming their daughter Judy in 1940, Dutch purchased the building at 119 5th Street in 1941. To better serve families and their guests, a chapel was added to the facility in 1956.

In 1982, Stephen P. Wood assumed operations of the funeral home, and it became known as Haughey-Wood Funeral Home. Mr. Haughey passed away in 1987, and Stephen Wood continued to personally operate the funeral home until his passing in 2006.
